Reception, Year 2 and Year 5 had a brilliant morning visiting Masjid e Anwaar e Madinah, the largest mosque based in the Sunderland area. We had a tour of the large prayer hall and we have really enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about the importance of this special place.

The children were exceptionally well-behaved and respectful and we are very proud of them!

Reading Circle

Love of Reading

At South Hetton Primary School, we recognise the importance of reading as a life skill and we take the teaching of reading seriously.

We believe reading should be purposeful and exciting and we value the joy of reading. Our reading intent is to give children a solid foundation of language and phonics teaching so they can enjoy stories as quickly as possible and be confident to talk about books and characters. Once children are fluent readers, we intend to submerge their learning in a wide range of fiction, non-fiction, plays, poetry and digital media to give them the skills of inference, reasoning and deduction as well as becoming lifelong readers.
