Online Safety

Online Safety at South Hetton Primary School

At South Hetton Primary School, we take online safety very seriously.
Children use computers, tablets, and phones for fun activities and to connect with friends. While this is great, it’s important to stay safe online.

Our Top Tips for Parents

  • Talk to people you know – Encourage your child to only chat with friends and family they know in real life.
  • Check what they’re doing online – Look at the apps, games, and websites they use.
  • Know who they’re talking to – Make sure they are not communicating with strangers.

If you have any concerns about online safety:
✅ Speak to your child’s teacher
✅ Report it through the school app or the website’s report function

Parents’ Online Safety Information

Most parents want to reduce risks for their children. Setting parental controls can help keep children safe and prevent accidental online spending.

Online safety is not just about protecting children from dangers—it’s also about helping them manage their use of technology. Most parental controls allow adults to set time limits for devices or apps.

Helpful Resources for Parents

Dealing with Online Bullying

Many children experience online bullying. Make sure they know it’s not acceptable and that they can talk to someone. Most apps and sites have reporting systems. If you need support or advice, please contact school.

Children can call Childline on 0800 1111 for advice on anything worrying them.

Important Legal Information

Since 2015, it has been a criminal offence for an adult to send a sexual message to a child (Section 67 of the Serious Crime Act 2015).
If you suspect this has happened:

  • Contact the Police immediately
  • Do not use the device further (to preserve evidence)
  • You can also report via the CEOP Safety Centre
